Father Engagement Skills Lab (Virtual)

About the course

This interactive skills lab offers practical skill-building experiences for trainees working with fathers in child welfare. It includes peer teaching activities as well as practice exercises for trying several engagement skills.

What will I learn in this training?

After attending this training, participants will be able to:

Model at least one practice behavior that allows for successful initial engagement with fathers at the beginning of the case worker/family relationship.
Demonstrate at least one effective engagement practice behavior to engage fathers and/or paternal relatives or tribes in their child welfare case.
Describe three techniques that promote effective communication and support fathers to successfully engage in and complete services.
Articulate how their own engagement practice behaviors can impact fathers’ experiences with CWS.
Commit to on-going exploration of individual biases and to reducing the harm caused by those biases.
Uphold the importance of maintaining and supporting relationships between children and their fathers, father-figures, and paternal relatives/tribes.
Honor a culturally responsive and strengths-based approach to engaging fathers and their relatives/tribes.

Joey Cordero

Joey Cordero Joey Cordero is the CEO and owner of Cordero Parenting Consulting Group, where he contracts with the state bar as a Court Appointed Family Engagement Specialist (CAFES) and consults, trains and presents both locally and nationally on topics related to fatherhood engagement. Cordero spent more than a decade as the Chair of the San Francisco Fatherhood Initiative. He was also a youth counselor for the Juvenile Justice Center of San Francisco's Young Fathers Program. A father who successfully re-unified with his daughter in 2009 through the child welfare system in San Francisco, he has been inspired to share his story of re-unification and to advocate for changing the way fathers are recognized and engaged in the child welfare system.

Roger De Leon

Roger De Leon is a minister, parent partner, trainer, and a child welfare consultant who utilizes his personal experience successfully navigating the child welfare and court systems to advocate for the safety and stability of children and families. As an independent contracting instructor for UC Davis, San Diego State University and UC Fresno, he develops and delivers state-mandated trainings throughout California focused on child welfare, fatherhood engagement and enhancing the skills of parent partners. A tireless advocate for children and families, he has positively influenced several statewide and national initiatives focused on child welfare and partnering with parents. In 2023, he received the Casey Family Programs Birth Father of the Year Award. Previously, De Leon was a parent partner with Riverside County. As one of the first parent partners hired, he dedicated more than 8 years to helping develop their program to support families along their journey toward reunification.
