Vicarious & Secondary Trauma: Toxic Stress, Compassion Fatigue, and Burnout (SAS)

This workshop will define trauma, stress, toxic stress, compassion fatigue and burnout in the workplace and their connection to the impact on the brain and body. We will explore the indicators of the natural-occurring human reactions and learn strategies to combat the negative effects. We will also learn about the development of resiliency and the importance of positivity, inclusivity, gratitude and self-care in both professional and personal lives to thrive. Through group discussions, activities, videos and self-assessments, we will acquire strategies and tools to focus on strengths and boost overall happiness and whole health.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to: 

  • Define trauma and learn the impact it has on the brain and body 

  • Define stress, toxic stress, vicarious trauma, compassion fatigue and burnout and their indicators 

  • Describe powerful, protective factors to combat toxic stress 

  • Understand how vicarious & secondary trauma operates and acquire strategies to address and manage it 

  • Discuss the concept of compassion satisfaction 

  • Explain how resiliency connects to whole health 

  • Focus on one’s own strengths to boost happiness 

  • Describe the importance of positivity, fun, laughter and inclusivity at work  

  • Explain strategies to practice gratitude and self-care
