ICWA Webinar Series: Placement Preferences
This 90-minute webinar focuses on mandatory placement preferences set forth by the Indian Child Welfare Act. The course will examine what the placement preferences are for foster care and for adoption, strategies for engaging with Tribes to facilitate compliance with the placement preferences, factors that may and may not be considered in determining good cause to depart from the placement preferences, as well as emergency removal and types of Tribal placements.
After attending this webinar, participants will be able to:
• Understand when placement preferences apply and what the preferences are in each situation.
• Understand the types of Tribal placements.
• Conduct and document an appropriate, diligent search for a preferred placement.
• Appropriately engage with a Tribe to facilitate compliance with the Placement Preferences.
• Appreciate the importance of complying with ICWA Placement Preferences to ensure children maintain ties with their Tribes and extended family.
