Coaching Institute for Child Welfare Supervisors (Virtual Training)

This two-day institute will provide supervisors with information to integrate the best skills, theories and abilities of coaching into a solid evidence-based supervision strategy. Additionally, this course will provide a tool for supervisors to use when coaching new social workers during their field-based learning components of the Core Program.

After attending this training, participants will be able to:

Accurately define coaching in child welfare
Recognize similarities, differences and connections between supervision and coaching
Understand how to supervise and coach
Use the child welfare coaching framework
Coach social workers specifically during their field based learning component of Core.
Communicate across differences using a lens to enhance relationships

The model of coaching discussed in this training is skills-based, and focused on improved practice in child welfare, which leads to improved outcomes in children and families. Supervisors will experience the role of both learner and coach during this experiential training. We will examine coaching skills, enhancing understanding of coaching, how organizations can support coaching, as well as common coaching dilemmas and challenges, and we will practice, practice, practice!

Tammy Sandoval

Tammy Sandoval, M.S.W., is the director of the Child Welfare Academy, where she leads efforts in designing, planning and providing Office of Children’s Services staff ongoing training. Previously, she served as director of the Office of Children’s Services beginning in 2005, where she planned and implemented programs related to child protective services, early intervention, permanency and adoption of children and families being served by OCS. Prior to that, Sandoval worked for ACTION for Child Protection, a national child welfare consulting firm that also operated the National Resource Center on Child Maltreatment.

Mindy Swisher

Mindy Swisher lives in Alaska and is one of five regional managers for the Office of Children’s Services. She is a licensed clinical social worker and is currently in the process of becoming an associate certified coach through the International Coaching Federation. Working in the field of child protection since 2006, Swisher has a passion for training, mentoring and coaching child protection workers. She has also promoted and developed programs within the agency that foster resilience among staff. Swisher is currently the chairperson for the Alaska Board of Social Work Examiners and in 2021 started a life coaching business.
