CANS and Supervision (Virtual Training)

Course Overview

This one-day workshop is for child welfare managers and supervisors who will be supporting child welfare social workers, mental health plan clinicians, juvenile probation staff and/or CFT facilitators in their use of the CANS in child welfare and mental health practice.

Prerequisite(s)

Completion of one of the following trainings is required prior to attending this training:

  • The CANS: Supporting Collaborative Assessment and Action Planning (formerly known as Module A); or
  • The CANS: Overview and Preparation for Certification (formerly known as Module B)

What will I learn in this training?

After attending this training, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the critical role they play in regard to implementation of team-based practice models for their county and in supporting their staff to integrate said practice.
  • Understand the key components of Supervision GPS in order to support their own staffs’ learning and skills development as it relates to the implementation and integration of team-based models within their county.
  • Explain their role in supporting their team in how the CANS is shared and discussed in CFTM’s to highlight the strengths and needs of the child or youth and inform the development of case plans.
  • Engage/coach a child welfare social worker or a mental health plan clinician in a discussion about how CANS findings lead to casework decisions.
  • Coach and develop a child welfare social worker or a mental health plan clinician working with a family and their team to consensus build and identify areas of strengths and needs to develop a case plan
  • Understand the value of facilitating and honoring child and/or youth and family openness and self-advocacy within the CFT and in CFT meetings.
  • Understand the value of seeking information about the child and/or youth and family’s culture and ethnicity and making sure that information is integrated in the CANS process and embedded in the assessment process.
