How Working Professionals Can Find the Best Flexible Online Programs for Career Growth
You’ve got a full schedule, a family and a dream—and only 24 hours a day. So how do you make school fit?
For working professionals, pursuing an education isn’t easy. Maintaining a healthy work-life balance on top of professional development opportunities can feel overwhelming.
Finding the right online learning—courses with flexible formats that respect your time and career goals—can help you find balance and achieve your objectives.
Why Online Learning Works for Adult Learners and Working Professionals
One of the biggest challenges facing adult learners is time—time away from the demands of family and work.
Yet in a rapidly evolving job market hyper-focused on AI and technology, upskilling is essential for job performance and career growth. According to a Gallup Workplace poll, the most common reasons for employee upskilling were to be more effective in their job (60%), to learn and grow (51%), fulfill a job requirement (39%) and advance careers or start a new one (20%).
While some choose in-house training from their organization, a recent Gallup Workplace poll suggests that more than half of working professionals turn elsewhere, including certificate programs (15%) and continuing education (13%).
At UC Davis Continuing and Professional Education many of our certificate programs and career-focused continuing education courses are available online, removing some of the common barriers facing adult learners, like scheduling and maintaining daily responsibilities. In a recent survey, nearly half of our LinkedIn audience said they prefer to learn new skills through online self-paced courses or live webinars—underscoring the need for flexible learning that works for busy adults.
How to Choose an Online Program That Fits a Working Professional’s Schedule
If you’re a busy adult looking to create a sustainable success plan to continue your education and advance your career, choose online programs that focus on the practical skills you’ll need in the workplace and provide strong support.
I built a routine—studying for a couple of hours before work and adding extra time on weekend mornings. It helped me maintain a healthy work–study–life balance, with evenings mostly free. The course content was challenging but genuinely captivating, which made it easy to stay engaged week after week.” –Calen Joubert, Winemaking Certificate Program
Finding Flexibility
Asynchronous
Asynchronous online classes offer self-paced, on-demand learning with no scheduled class times. You access and complete lectures, readings and assignments on your schedule, with coursework typically due within a specific timeframe or by the end of the course. Because you don’t have to be online at a specific time, this self-guided learning experience offers the most flexibility, while still providing opportunities to connect with your instructor and classmates.
Synchronous
Synchronous online classes are live sessions with real-time interaction. You attend classes at the same time as your instructor and classmates and move through the course together. Some synchronous courses allow you to pace yourself through coursework but may have set exam dates, offering some flexibility when it comes to deadlines. However, because you attend class with a group, these courses require you to commit to the class schedule and can’t be rescheduled to fit your needs.
Hybrid
Hybrid classes offer a blend of online and in-person learning, ideal if you have nights or weekends free and want in-person interaction.
Active Networking and Online Learning Support
Regardless of the type of online program you choose, CPE provides accessible, reliable support for online students and opportunities to network with peers and instructors. Our online courses—even our asynchronous ones—are instructor-led with regular feedback and communication, as well as plenty of chances to connect with your classmates through discussion boards and group projects. So while you get to choose when and where you learn, you’re never alone.
The online learning experience was fantastic. It didn't feel like a typical online class. It felt like I was engaged in face-to-face study.” –Rajesh Kumar Yadav, Project Management Certificate Program

Avoiding Burnout
Juggling life, work and learning can lead to burnout. “What really matters is creating time for the things that matter most to you,” said Brad Aeon, a researcher and time management expert.
To achieve a work-life-study balance and avoid burnout, use your time to prioritize what’s most important. Put your health and wellbeing first. Make time for family and friends. Remind yourself of your “why” to stay motivated and focused on long-term goals. Prioritize your tasks, set boundaries and lean on your support system. And don’t forget to ask for help.
I was ready to quit. But my husband encouraged me and reminded me of who I am—smart and driven. Many times, I doubted myself and my decision to change careers. This program gave me the confidence I was craving.” –Melissa Hall, Accounting Principles Certificate Program
