Research and Evaluation
The Research and Evaluation team collaborates with human services agencies across the state, helping them use data to address challenges and improve services for children, adults, families and their communities.
During 2023-2024, our team:
- Supported six counties through their California Child and Family Services Review (C-CFSR)
- Supported six counties through the first ever iteration of the CalWORKs Outcomes and Accountability Review (Cal-OAR)
We also created and published the DSP Workforce Survey Dashboard, which provides metrics and key performance indicators for the agencies that employ Direct Service Professionals. DSPs provide services to disabled Californians.
In addition, the Research and Evaluation Team has created user friendly reports to ensure findings from the National Core Indicators surveys are accessible to people who receive services and their families. As an example of this work, we invite you to explore the Adult Family Survey Family Report produced for the Department of Developmental Services.

A note from Alison Book
Executive Director, Human Services at UC Davis Continuing and Professional Education
Fiscal year 2023-2024 was a wild, exciting, creative year for Human Services at UC Davis. We saw a post-pandemic wave of county interest in returning to in-person offerings, and our Custom Training and Services Team delivered more than 1,000 in-person trainings for the counties we serve. Our Research and Evaluation Team launched a beautiful new data dashboard for the Department of Developmental Services, ensuring accessible information for all constituents. The Resource Center for Family-Focused Practice hosted the largest Partnerships for Well-Being Institute in years, with more than 850 attendees, and continued to launch the Center for Excellence in Family Finding, Engagement and Support to help counties develop a kin-first culture. The Northern Academy, in close partnership with the other California regional training academies (RTAs), stepped up to take on a new, collective role in statewide training coordination, and together the RTAs developed the first-ever statewide workforce development strategic plan. And, UC Davis became one of two new host sites for the California Title IV-E Education Program, transitioning the program in record time to ensure continuity for universities and social work students who rely on the program’s support.
Through it all, we remain steadfastly focused on you, California’s human services staff and leaders, and the children, youth, families and adults you serve. We aim to model the parallel process at all levels, truly believing that our UC Davis team being caring, supportive and responsive helps you do the same in your own role. We consistently ask ourselves how we can best support you to make an even greater impact for the individuals and families you work with every day. Whether this means new training delivery methods, new best practice topic areas, statewide advocacy for county needs, expanded coaching and technical assistance services, instructor skill development, or improved cross-team collaboration within our own programs, we are always working to enhance our services and supports to provide the best possible experience for you. And, we always strive to keep the “human” in Human Services.
Thank you for your partnership with us and the impactful work you do each day.
Here’s to another collaborative, creative year ahead!
