The SOP Toolkit: Back to the Basics

Stories from the field and resources to help you get the most out of the SOP Toolkit

Safety Organized Practice has become so embedded in child welfare best practice that its acronym (SOP) can be tossed around loosely in the field. Many new social workers may not yet fully understand what SOP is, and many more may lack an understanding of its full history. Even seasoned SOP Champions may need a refresher from time to time.

The good news? We have an online Toolkit for that! Whether you’re new to SOP or looking for tips and tools specific to your role, the online SOP Toolkit has something for you.

SOP Shines in Sacramento County

In Sacramento County, the Child Protective Services Division (CPS) administers the Cultural Brokers Program, a joint CPS and community effort to implement strategies designed to reduce African American child deaths, first-time entries and reentries into the child welfare system; and to improve placement and permanency outcomes for children and families.

Tiffany Glass is the program planner for Sacramento County Child Protective Services who oversees the program.

“The SOP Toolkit has been integrated into continuous coaching and training with the Cultural Brokers,” Glass shared in writing. “[It has] been pivotal in providing them with on-the-ground tools that support family’s child welfare goals.”

Sacramento County’s cultural brokers are trained in SOP case consultation practice. They receive coaching and support from CPS and the Northern Academy to continue building and enhancing the brokers’ engagement practices. Glass shared that during case consultation, the Direct Practice Tools for Social Workers section was the most used; specifically, the Engagement and Teaming subsections.

“The tools in these sections offer materials that the Cultural Brokers can utilize to connect and engage with families, support families in advocating for themselves, and help families build and strengthen their network. The Toolkit has proven to be user friendly and a wonderful resource for direct service staff.”
