The Ripple Effect
In the work of human services, we are often planting seeds without ever seeing what will grow. While we rarely get to see the full arc of a young person or family’s journey, every now and then we are gifted with the chance to witness something extraordinary unfold.
For one youth, I’ve witnessed many “first” milestones over the years. Things like her first basketball season, the first time she rode a horse, getting a driver’s license, saving for and purchasing her first vehicle, moving into her first apartment—the list goes on. I met this youth, Kristina Tanner, fifteen years ago in my role as a youth partner on a High-Fidelity Wraparound team. In this role, I was responsible for building authentic relationships with youth and their siblings—both in their homes and in their communities. My focus was to explore their identities, aspirations, interests and passions. My role was never to define who they were, but rather to create space for exploration. Sometimes my presence was welcomed with open arms; other times, it was met with resistance. Both responses were valid. Sometimes, all I could offer was a quiet ride home–a space where silence spoke louder than words. I remained committed to showing up with consistency, curiosity and respect.
Within this dynamic, Kristina and I built a connection grounded in healing, creativity and consistency.
I didn’t know then that our paths would intertwine in such a meaningful way, or that years later, her perseverance and unwavering influence would lead to such a massive wave of systemic change—creating a ripple effect.
Fifteen years after we first met, Kristina Tanner’s advocacy work has since helped shape policy that will impact thousands of foster youth, with the Strength-Building Dollars that have been allocated as part of the state’s new Tiered Rate Structure. This is huge! And it is more than a policy win—it is a reflection of what happens when lived experience meets purpose and persistence.
I have always been inspired by Kristina’s power and perseverance; however, watching her create real systems change has been one of the greatest honors of my career.
Kristina’s commitment to youth advocacy, and her ability to drive meaningful change, have positioned her as a leading voice in shaping child welfare policy in California. She has spearheaded policy initiatives, created educational resources and built strategic partnerships that uplift both youth and stakeholders.
Supportive relationships can be therapeutic without being therapy. Positive childhood experiences that are tailored to a young person’s strengths can lessen the impact of adversity and help children develop, build and nurture strengths and personal autonomy.
Fifteen years ago, I had never imagined that my consistent presence as a mentor in Kristina’s life would have this impact on her, nor did I realize what kind of impact she was going to have on me. One relationship–one moment of trust, one opportunity to heal—can lead to a wave of change. I am so proud of the work that Kristina is doing.
Youth in care are not just recipients of services; they are leaders, changemakers and visionaries. When we invest in their strengths, we invest in a better future for all.
May we continue planting seeds—and trusting in the ripple effect.
