National Conference on Coaching Inspires Human Services Professionals to “Cultivate a Growth Mindset”
Despite challenges faced with COVID-19 over the past two years, the coaching of staff (and their clients) continues to play a critical role in health and human services––now more than ever. Hosted by UC Davis Continuing and Professional Education–Human Services, the 2022 National Conference on Coaching in Human Services provided a valuable opportunity to bring together professionals from across the nation to develop and support coaching programs that benefit human services professionals, their organizations and the clients they serve. The conference took place as a virtual event on April 13-14 and more than 200 participants attended.
In addition to nearly two dozen workshops, the conference featured three dynamic keynote speakers–each bringing expertise and insights during their presentations:
"We need to think for ourselves, as ourselves," said Hazel Morley in her keynote presentation, “Shift from Chaos to Clarity,” about adapting practical behaviors that encourage productive thinking patterns in our daily lives. Morley is a coach, facilitator, teacher, global faculty member and chair for the North American Collegiate. She has worked with individuals, teams, and various organizations to enable people to perform at their best.
"Being clear is kind...we need to be living B.I.G (with Boundaries, Integrity and Generosity)," Aiko Bethea explained in her keynote presentation, “Transactional vs. Transformational Leadership and Equity,” which emphasized practicing empathy for oneself and others in our modern world of distractions. Bethea is an award-winning and highly sought-after equity consultant, executive coach and speaker whose consulting practice focuses on coaching leaders and organizations to remove barriers to inclusion.
"To be effective leaders, we must tame our Advice Monsters by asking more questions, instead of telling people what to do," Michael Bungay Stanier emphasized in his keynote presentation, 'Using a Coaching Lens to Cultivate and Maintain a Growth Mindset.' He spoke about incorporating practical tools that lead to behavioral change through several coaching concepts. Bungay Stanier is the author of six books that have sold more than a million copies between them, and his bestseller is a self-help book titled, The Coaching Habit.
As the conference wrapped up, here’s what some of the participants had to say about what they learned:
“The opening keynote gave me different ways of how to get clients to think about what is going on and the importance of just listening.”
“So impactful. I felt that Ms. Bethea was talking directly to me and motivating me.”
“I really enjoyed the delivery of the content. I definitely learned a lot about changing of the mindset and looking at advice monsters which is a new concept to me.’
