Strategies for Developing Food Sovereignty and Native Foodways
Track: Cultural
COVID-19 has disrupted the supply chain with many rural communities relying on one grocery store, the stock has been further reduced for an already low-access area. Many of these communities have turned toward the planting of personal and community gardens. These gardens have been a literal lifeline for those residents. With the success of spring plantings, communities have sought additional help for technical assistance for winter gardens as many have never made this transition. Many community members still lack employment and need support to provide seeds, tools, soil, and other amendments as well as technical assistance to scale business models. Food sovereignty is the belief that the people who produce, distribute, and consume food should control the mechanisms and policies of food production and distribution. Native foodways is rooting food sovereignty in traditional cultivation methods and empowered by culture.
