This interactive training introduces participants to Jurisdiction/Disposition report templates and emphasizes how to write reports that meet legal requirements while clearly presenting information and evidence to the court. The session focuses on organizing report content in a way that strengthens the likelihood that social workers’ jurisdiction and disposition recommendations are adopted.
Participants will engage in oral presentation, written exercises, small group discussion and review of sample report sections.
After attending this training, participants will be able to:
- Define and distinguish the concepts of best interest and detriment and identify when each standard applies at a disposition hearing
- Identify hearsay statements in a jurisdiction report and recognize which statements fall under Welfare and Institutions Code section 355
- Identify the judicial findings required for removal, disposition and ordering a bypass of services under commonly used bypass provisions
- Present evidence in the body of the report that supports a finding of jurisdiction from the petition
- Identify legal issues from a current case that must be addressed in the disposition report
- Present evidence to support a recommendation to bypass services under section 361.5(b) or (e)
- Recognize the parents’ constitutional right to the care, custody and control of their children and understand the importance of fair and complete reports when the juvenile court limits those rights
