California AB 175 (2019) grants foster youth the right to be placed in care consistent with their gender identity and to be referred to by their chosen name and pronouns. This course provides comprehensive, interactive training designed to increase competence about sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression, while providing practitioners with increased knowledge, tools and resources for working with youth. This training is designed to create a greater understanding of the issues facing foster youth in their homes, schools and communities and the skills necessary to treat these children with care, respect and love so they can successfully prepare to lead healthy, productive and happy lives.
At the end of this course the learner will be able to:
- Increase awareness of the complexities of youth in relation to sexual orientation, gender identity and expression
- Enhance awareness of the critical role that having supportive environments plays in determining long term well-being outcomes for the youth in your care
- Gain a functional understanding of the differences between and know the basic definitions for sexual orientation, gender, gender identity and gender expression
- Expand understanding and knowledge of terminology, definitions an affirming approach and practices
