SOGIE Professional Development - Time for Radical Change and Acceptance: Cultivating and Creating a Safe and Equitable Community for SOGIE-Diverse Youth

This course provides comprehensive, interactive training lessons designed to increase competence about sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression (SOGIE), while providing practitioners with increased knowledge, tools and resources for working with lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or questioning, intersex, asexual or ally (LGBTQIA+) youth. This training is designed to create a greater understanding of the issues facing LGBTQ+ youth in their homes, schools and communities and the skills necessary to treat these children with the same care, respect and love that each and every child deserves, so they can successfully prepare to lead healthy, productive and happy lives.

At the end of this course the learner will be able to:

  • Increase awareness of the complexities of youth who identify as LGBTQIA+
  • Enhance awareness of the critical role that having supportive environments plays in determining long term well-being outcomes for the youth in your care
  • Gain a functional understanding of the differences between and know the basic definitions for sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, and gender expression
  • Expand understanding and knowledge of terminology, definitions an affirming approach and practices
