Social workers, case managers and employment counselors are on the front lines of supporting families as they navigate poverty, cash aid and pathways to economic self-sufficiency. Too often, the system positions staff as gatekeepers, focusing on compliance and rules rather than encouragement and growth. This interactive workshop invites participants to reimagine their roles as concierges of services: trusted guides who build supportive relationships, connect families with resources and foster resilience. Through reflection, case studies, role plays and practical tools, participants will shift from punitive, compliance-based approaches to strength-based, relationship-centered practices that empower families to thrive.
Learning Objectives
After attending this training, participants will be able to:
- Reframe their role from compliance enforcer to a supportive concierge of services.
- Apply strength-based communication strategies that encourage resilience and growth.
- Recognize and leverage relationships as a tool to support family stability, health, and self-sufficiency.
- Identify practical ways to integrate resilience-building approaches into CalWORKs practice.
