Household Composition in Public Assistance Programs

This workshop examines the household composition/assistance unit requirements in the CalFresh, CalWORKS and Medi-Cal programs.

Couse highlights include:

  • CalFresh: Purchase and Prepare concept, household types, student status, roomers and boarders, separate CF household, elderly/disabled
  • CalWORKs: Mandatory, optional and excluded persons, Caretaker Relative, combined, multi-generational and single person AUs
  • Non-MAGI Medi-Cal: Medi-Cal Family Budget Unit (MFBU) and Mini-Budget Units (MBU)
  • MAGI Medi-Cal: Tax household and whose-income-counts determinations

The impact of household composition on treatment of income within the various programs will also be discussed. Participants will have the opportunity to apply eligibility concepts during group discussions of case examples and scenarios.

By the end of this course, participants should:

  • Have a clearer understanding of guiding eligibility principles applying to the determination of households/assistance units within Public Assistance programs
  • Be able to explain household composition/assistance unit differences and similarities within the CalFresh, CalWORKS and Medi-Cal programs
  • Be able to apply household composition/assistance unit rules to their daily case processing
