Course Description: Hoarding Behavior in Vulnerable Adults

 

This course is designed to equip Adult Protective Services (APS) workers with the skills and tools needed to serve clients with hoarding-type behaviors. Utilizing a combination of discussion, demonstration and skills-based practice, learners will leave with data-driven and in-depth knowledge regarding the development, reinforcement and interventions for hoarding-type behaviors. New tools, resources and approaches will be introduced to provide a comprehensive, real-world approach. The course is designed for APS workers; however, the content is relevant for anyone assisting clients with hoarding-type behaviors.

Course objectives:

  • Differentiate between hoarding, collecting, cluttering and squalor and the varying interventions based on this distinction.
  • Identify the factors that contribute to, reinforce and maintain hoarding-type behaviors and hoarding disorder.
  • Leave with tools, tips, strategies and interventions that workers can use to intervene.
  • Provide real-world resources to offer to clients and families.
