Foundations in Youth and Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity and Expression

California AB 175 (2019) grants foster youth the right to be placed in care consistent with their gender identity and to be referred to by their chosen name and pronouns. This interactive training explores sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression from a youth lens, while providing practitioners with comprehensive information, tools and resources for engaging and supporting young people consistent with policy and best practice.

After attending this training, participants will be able to:

  • Engage children and youth with care and respect
  • Describe concepts, terminology and rationale related sexual orientation, gender, gender identity and gender expression
  • Differentiate between sexual orientation, gender, gender identity and gender expression
  • Improve self-knowledge to reduce the chance of any inner bias impacting vulnerable children and families
  • Understand and uphold the rights of foster youth related to and enacted by AB 175
  • Assess how to identify and support the specific needs of youth related to sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression
  • Create safer and more supportive environments for children and youth
