The Basics for Supporting Families Challenged with Addiction

This training will provide best practices for supporting families who are challenged with addictions, including alcoholism and other chemical substance dependency, and co-occurring disorders. Staff will gain fundamental knowledge around the disease of addiction, including how drugs work, the risk factors of addiction, the impact of substance abuse, and its connection with mental health.

An overview of treatment and prevention strategies will be provided. In addition, tools will be provided to learn how to support a dysfunctional family along with the ability to recognize the impact on the family at-large during the period of addiction. Participants will also learn how to apply techniques to assess and engage families from a strength based, solution-focused approach.

After attending this training, participants will be able to:

  • Identify some of the most common used drugs
  • Analyze techniques to assess and engage families
  • Examine the dynamics of families experiencing multi-problem challenges
