Working With the Criminal Justice System (eLearning)

APS professionals play a key role in protecting older and dependent adults while supporting the criminal justice system in holding perpetrators of abuse, neglect or exploitation accountable. This course explores how APS collaborates with law enforcement, prosecutors and the courts to enhance client safety. Participants will examine California-specific legal frameworks, APS policies and procedures and culturally responsive, client-centered practices that address the diverse needs of California communities.

After attending this training, participants will be able to:

  • Distinguish the role of Adult Protective Services from the roles of law enforcement and prosecution
  • Describe the value of culturally responsive, person-centered approaches when working with the criminal justice system
  • Explain the legal burdens of proof used in criminal justice cases
  • Identify the types of evidence used in criminal cases to establish the elements of a crime
  • Explain how APS documentation is used by the criminal justice system
