Understanding Substance Use Disorders and Supporting Community Members

This course provides a trauma-informed foundation for understanding substance use disorders (SUD) and equips professionals and community members with the skills to offer compassionate, effective support. Participants will explore the impact of SUD on individuals, families and communities, and learn practical strategies for early intervention, crisis response and resource navigation. The training concludes with resilience-building and self-care practices to help sustain long-term engagement and reduce burnout.

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the impact of SUD on individuals, families and communities, including behavioral, emotional and social consequences.
  • Identify trauma-informed early intervention strategies that reduce the risk of developing SUD across diverse populations.
  • Demonstrate the application of trauma-informed care principles when engaging with clients effected by SUD.
  • Conduct client assessments and facilitate referrals to appropriate local treatment and support services.
  • Implement crisis intervention techniques to safely manage and de-escalate high-risk situations involving clients with SUD.
  • Create a personal wellness and self-care plan to enhance professional resilience and prevent burnout in behavioral health practice.
