Supervisor Development Series 1
The Supervisor Development Series equips supervisors with enhanced skills to lead change, foster collaboration, make results-oriented decisions and effectively lead people. The leadership frameworks used in this series is grounded in adaptive leadership principles and the multidimensional competencies supervisors need to support workforce well-being, drive change and improve outcomes for children, youth, adults, families and communities.
Through this evidence-based program and ongoing partnerships with human services agencies across the country, UC Davis Human Services continues to advance its mission to deliver innovative, research-driven workforce and organizational development services that improve the lives of those most in need.
Modules
The Supervisor Development Series consists of six modules.
Module 1 - The Role of the Supervisor
This foundational module introduces learners to the Leadership Competency framework, based on adaptive leadership and the core skills needed by supervisors in human services. Participants will explore how to promote workforce well-being, lead change and drive positive outcomes for individuals and families served by their agencies.
Module 2 - Emotional and Social Intelligence
High workplace performance isn’t always tied to intelligence. While IQ has value, emotional intelligence (EQ) is often a stronger predictor of success, especially in human services. EQ helps supervisors manage stress, build positive relationships and navigate adversity. This module explores EQ fundamentals and how supervisors can develop these skills to lead with empathy and resilience.
Module 3 - DiSC in the Workplace: Effective Communication Strategies
Self-awareness is a key leadership trait. In this module, learners complete a DiSC self-assessment to uncover their communication styles, motivators, conflict tendencies and stress responses. Understanding these patterns allows supervisors to build stronger relationships, improve communication and lead more effectively within their teams.
Module 4 - Crucial Conversations
Performance management is one of a supervisor’s core responsibilities. Done well, it recognizes employee strengths, supports professional growth and addresses areas for improvement. This module equips learners with the skills and confidence to give and receive feedback, hold meaningful conversations and foster a culture of accountability and development.
Module 5 - The Five Behaviors of Teambuilding
Supervisors play a vital role in developing and sustaining high-performing teams. While early team formation focuses on purpose and goals, long-term success depends on leadership. This module helps supervisors guide their teams by building shared vision, encouraging collaboration and managing conflict. Participants will learn to appreciate individual differences and practice strategies for addressing team challenges.
Module 6 - Coaching and Feedback
In complex and demanding environments like human services, employees must perform safely, efficiently and with a client-centered focus. Supervisors are responsible for ensuring team effectiveness and supporting staff development, especially when addressing performance gaps or implementing change. This module teaches supervisors how to diagnose performance issues, apply coaching techniques and select the right interventions to support success.
