Parent Partners: Building Resilience with Hope and Healing (Virtual Training)

Increasing hope in the lives of trauma survivors deserves our primary focus as we aim for creating or enhancing resilience. Hope is not simply an emotion. There is a long-established, measurable science around hope (based on Snyder’s Hope Theory) with sound, validated measures for both adults and children. The evidence is convincing that hope buffers stress and adversity, predicts important outcomes, and can be learned and sustained. Participants will learn different strategies to help instill hope in the clients with whom they work.

Learning Objectives:

Understand apply the theory and science behind hope and resiliency
Explore different culturally responsive approaches to discussing spirituality, ritual, and mindfulness practice
Apply strength-based approaches, such as Motivational Interviewing techniques to draw out hope and resiliency from client interactions

Amanda Gibson

Amanda Gibson, LCSW, M.S.W., is the founder and CEO of Counseling Col:lab in Sacramento California, which provides a collaborative space where therapists of all different backgrounds come together to serve the Sacramento area. Gibson is also an adjunct professor at the USC School of Social Work and the CEO of Rita’s work, a platform that assists first responders and shelter staff in providing critical services to the community. Previously, Gibson served as Executive Director of Good Shepherd Shelter in Los Angeles. An independent professional counselor with more than 15 years of experience, Gibson treats adults and families in the areas of child welfare, domestic violence, trauma, chronic health, and mental health and wellness. In addition to her extensive clinical skills, she has always integrated self-care into each agency she has been a part of, and as a result has led very successful teams who provide high quality, efficient services, with low rates of burnout and staff turnover.

Roger De Leon

Roger De Leon is a minister, parent partner, trainer, and a child welfare consultant who utilizes his personal experience successfully navigating the child welfare and court systems to advocate for the safety and stability of children and families. As an independent contracting instructor for UC Davis, San Diego State University and UC Fresno, he develops and delivers state-mandated trainings throughout California focused on child welfare, fatherhood engagement and enhancing the skills of parent partners. A tireless advocate for children and families, he has positively influenced several statewide and national initiatives focused on child welfare and partnering with parents. In 2023, he received the Casey Family Programs Birth Father of the Year Award. Previously, De Leon was a parent partner with Riverside County. As one of the first parent partners hired, he dedicated more than 8 years to helping develop their program to support families along their journey toward reunification.
