Motivational Interviewing - Advanced Skills for Supervisors

Course Overview

This advanced Motivational Interviewing (MI) course builds on foundational MI knowledge and skill and supports supervisors to identify MI-consistent skill to use in supervision, as well as MI-inconsistent skills to avoid.  Participants will explore ways to support teams and staff in MI practice.  Additionally, options for communities of practice and other ways to keep MI alive in service delivery will be explored.  

Learning Objectives

After attending this course, participants will be able to:

  • Recognize three ways to incorporate Motivational Interviewing in supervision.  
  • Identify three conversation roadblocks to reduce or avoid in supervision.
  • Recall three ways to support staff in their Motivational Interviewing practice.
  • Describe at least two ways to help staff continue to build Motivational Interviewing knowledge and skill.
  • Examine activities to incorporate into communities of practice for Motivational Interviewing.
  • Demonstrate a Motivational Interviewing consistent coaching style.  
  • Foster competent Motivational Interviewing practice through the skillful use of Motivational Interviewing within supervision.
