Integrating CANS into CFT Meetings & Case Planning

This course provides a framework and structured approach for integrating the Child and Adolescent Strengths (CANS) into Child and Family Team (CFT) meetings and case plans for children, youth and families involved in the child welfare system. The class will address preparing the family, discussing the CANS in the CFT meeting, how to “implicitly” rate CANS items based on needs and strengths discussed, and how to review draft CANS ratings with CFT members during meetings. In addition, participants will learn how to translate the needs of children, youth and families into target needs to be addressed in the case plan and how to build behaviorally-based case plan objectives based on CANS target needs and strengths that can support planning.

After attending this training, participants will:

  • Understand the structure of the CFT meeting and how the CANS is integrated into the meeting.
  • Understand how to review and build consensus around CANS ratings in the CFT meeting.
  • Using a case scenario, demonstrate how to identify target needs and integrate them into case planning within a CFT meeting.
  • Using a case scenario, practice creating behaviorally-based case plan objectives that link to target needs on the CANS.
  • Endorse the importance of utilizing ICPM guiding principles and practice behaviors within a CFT meeting.
  • Appreciate the importance of preparation with the child/youth and family to support effective discussion of CANS and case planning within the meeting.

    2. Effective CFT Meetings (previously titled The Role of the Social Worker in the Child and Family Team Meeting), OR
