Foundations in Youth and SOGIE (Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity, and Expression) (Virtual)

This interactive training explores sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression (SOGIE) from a youth lens, while providing practitioners with comprehensive information, tools, and resources for engaging lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or questioning, intersex, and asexual or ally (LGBTQIA+) youth.

After attending this training, participants will have increased capacity to:

Engage LGBTQIA+ children and youth with the same care, respect and love that each and every child deserves
Describe concepts, terminology, and rationale related to SOGIE and
Differentiate between sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, and gender expression
Improve self-knowledge to reduce the chance of any inner bias impacting vulnerable children and families
Uphold the rights of foster youth related to SOGIE enacted by AB 175
Assess how to identify and support specific needs of LGBTQIA+ youth
Create safer and more supportive environments for LGBTQIA+ youth

Parker Terese

Parker Terese, M.S.W., is led by purpose, receiving zir Master’s of Social Work while also inspiring people to pursue higher education through mentorship, social media and public speaking. Parker has served those impacted by the foster care and juvenile justice systems since 2014, as a mentor for Court Appointed Special Advocates and the Educational Opportunity Program in San Bernardino, CA. Ze has worked to rebuild a youth-led chapter in San Bernardino County and champion legislative and policy change through zir role as an advocate and statewide policy coordinator for one of the leading youth-led organizations in California. Parker uses zir voice to train child welfare professionals on sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, Extended Foster Care, and many other topics.

Tracy Flynn

Tracy Flynn has more than 25 years of experience in management and leadership positions in local and national health, welfare, and education institutions. Her mission is to provide training and coaching to support healthy individuals, organizations, families, and communities. Her expertise includes K-18 education, child welfare systems, anti-bias and inclusion, community engagement, coaching, and leadership development. She works with leaders, teams, and practitioners on program implementation and as a work/life coach. Previous positions include National Training Director with the National CASA Association (a nonprofit providing training, grants, and advocacy within child welfare), Director of Training with Planned Parenthood of Western Washington, and Health Curriculum Specialist with Seattle Public Schools. Flynn currently works as an independent consultant, coach, and facilitator with the private sector, K-18 education, health care organizations, and numerous nonprofits. She is certified as an interim executive director and as a Welcoming Schools/All Children–All Families facilitator.
