Family Time Coaching: An Overview for Social Workers

About the course

This engaging ½ day course provides an overview of Family Time Coaching, an evidence-supported model for parent-child visitation for case carrying social workers. This overview course aims to equip participants with the knowledge and skills needed to differentiate Family Time Coaching from traditional supervised visits and to understand the pivotal role of the family time coach in facilitating effective preparation and debriefing for parents.

What will I learn in this training?

After attending this training, participants will have increased capacity to:

  • Appreciate the purpose and benefits of regular family time for both the child and parent
  • Describe how the Family Time Coaching model upholds the rights of families involved with child welfare services, ensuring planned, purposeful and progressive visitation
  • Understand essential elements of Family Time Coaching, including the family time plan meeting, pre-visit coaching, during-visit coaching, and post-visit debriefing.
  • Articulate how Family Time Coaching assists parents in identifying their child(ren)'s needs and devising strategies to meet them during family time, aligning these needs and strengths with those identified in the Child and Family Team's CANS assessment.
  • Value the critical importance of partnering with the case carrying social worker and resource parent to ensure that family time progresses smoothly and addresses the child's attachment needs effectively.
