Effectively Working with People With Disabilities

In this eLearning, learners will explore disability in the past and present and talk about the disability movement in the United States. They will learn about three categories of disabilities commonly experienced by people engaged in Adult Protective Services. Finally, they will learn about some examples of disabilities and how to effectively engage people with a wide range of abilities and disabilities.

After completing this course, participants will be able to: 

  • Identify disability-related terms and language.
  • Describe the history of disability rights in the United States.
  • Identify three common types of disabilities experienced by people in APS.
  • Identify effective language and communication strategies to accommodate and promote meaningful interactions among persons with disabilities.
  • Recognize various populations of people who experience a higher rate of victimization.
