ECHO: Developmental and Mental Health Disorders in Early Childhood (0–5 years)

Step outside the traditional classroom learning environment to increase collective knowledge and improve outcomes across our California System of Care.

The UC Davis Resource Center for Family-Focused Practice is pleased to present a six-session ECHO series dedicated to enhancing understanding and support for young children experiencing developmental and mental health challenges. This series will explore the unique needs of children ages 0-5 diagnosed with or showing signs of disorders such as Autism (ASD), Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Attention-Deficit Disorder (ADD), Attachment Disorders, Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD), mood disorders and the impact of early childhood trauma.

Series Format

Each session will feature expert-led presentations, real-world case discussions, and peer learning opportunities designed to empower professionals working in early childhood systems. Topics will span neurodevelopmental conditions, behavioral concerns and the complex effects of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACES) on the 0-5 year population. Through this collaborative ECHO model, participants will gain practical strategies and interdisciplinary insights to better support young children and their families.

What Will I Learn?

After attending the series, participants will be able to:

Identify key characteristics and early indicators of developmental and mental health disorders in young children.
Apply evidence-informed strategies and tools to support early identification, intervention and cross-system collaboration.
Strengthen their ability to work effectively with families and professionals from multiple systems of care, including early education, regional centers, behavioral health, pediatric care and child welfare.

Why Early Childhood?

The first five years of life are a critical period for brain development and emotional growth. When mental health or developmental concerns arise during this time, timely and coordinated intervention is essential. Children facing these challenges often need tailored, trauma-informed care that addresses their holistic needs - spanning cognitive, social, emotional and relational domains. By bringing together professionals across disciplines, this ECHO series fosters the knowledge, skills and community of practice needed to improve outcomes four our youngest and most vulnerable children.

Kim Stokem

Kim Stokem, L.M.F.T., has more than 20 years of experience working in behavioral health through Contra Costa County and community-based organizations. She has extensive training in Wraparound for ages 0 to 21 though the Children’s System of Care. She has expertise in early childhood development, infant and child mental health, didactic work, and Wraparound. She has been chairperson of the statewide Early Childhood Wraparound work group and a participant in the Wraparound Standards work group and Wraparound Certification work group.

Dawne Lynch

Dawne Lynch is a Wraparound specialist with the Resource Center on Family-Focused Practice at UC Davis Continuing and Professional Education - Human Services. She has been providing services to youth and families for over 15 years. As a mother who raised a child with challenges, she brings both personal and professional life experience to the support she offers. She is active in her community and collaborates with UC Davis Human Services as co-chair for the Parent Advisory Council, Special Education Parent Advisory Committee. She also facilitates the Southern Region of the Peer Partner Hub, co-chairs the Southern California Wraparound Hub, is a member of the California Wraparound Steering Committee member for CWAC, as well as the California Wraparound Advisory Committee itself. As the Program Specialist for Oak Grove Center, she provided training, coaching and mentoring in Wraparound to the staff, youth and families.
