Child and Family Team (CFT) Meetings: Facilitation Training (In-Person)

This intensive training is designed to provide participants with basic meeting facilitation knowledge and skills. Utilizing the Integrated Core Practice Model (ICPM) as the foundational guide for CFT meeting facilitators, trainees will learn about:

Key elements of team meetings for safety and case planning
Procedural basics of team meeting facilitation
The role of the facilitator
Facilitator skills
Structured problem-solving and solution-focused dialogue within team meetings
Creating safe, inclusive and empowering spaces for child/youth and family voice and choice
Introducing and using the Child and Adolescent Needs and Strengths (CANS) to reflect the needs and strengths of the child and family

Trainees will have opportunities for hands-on facilitation practice throughout the 5-day training and will be equipped to facilitate child and family team meetings across the intervention continuum that address safety, permanency, and well-being.

Ken Weston

Ken Weston has worked in public child welfare as a caseworker and supervisor since 1989 and retired as a Child and Family Team Meeting Facilitator and Field Advisor in August 2020. Mentoring child welfare social workers in the early 2000s led to his current interests in training, curriculum development and coaching. Weston has delivered Safety Organized Practice trainings for Riverside County since 2017 and has developed curricula around court testimony and fatherhood engagement. He is currently involved with the Cultural Responsiveness Academy and gives local university and community presentations to foster positive regard for the child welfare profession.

Peggi Cooney

Peggi Cooney, M.S.W., is a Safety Organized Practice coach and trainer for Human Services at UC Davis Continuing and Professional Education. She has more than 15 years of experience in social services with expertise in child welfare, adult services and supervision in Colusa County. In that same county, Cooney developed the Independent Living Program and was part of the team that developed and implemented the Multiple Discipline Interview Team. During her tenure in Colusa County, she was also an adjunct faculty member, where she taught psychology at Woodland Community College.
