CDSS Foundational Child Welfare Training Series (Virtual)

This class is part of a series of trainings designed for California Department of Social Services employees. Each class focuses on a different topic within Child Welfare and will enhance the participant’s knowledge in this topic area. Classes should be taken as a series but can be taken individually if they need to be made up.

Rebekah Rogers

Rebekah Rogers, M.A., served as a social worker for Tuolumne County’s Adult, Child and Family Services for 12 years, including five years as the supervisor of the Emergency Response unit. She has also served as the Foster and Kinship Care Education program specialist for several counties, where she wrote curriculum and delivered training workshops for Resource Family Approval caregivers. Rogers has been teaching for UC Davis Human Services Northern Academy since 2015.

Dionne Puckett

Dionne Puckett, M.S.W., is an instructor with Human Services at UC Davis Continuing and Professional Education. With nearly two decades of human services experience, Puckett has served in a variety of positions of community outreach, leadership, direct practice, and education. As a social worker with San Diego County, she honed in on her ability to provide leadership, engagement, and education to a multitude of families and staff. Puckett combines her professional experience with theory, adult learning model and best practice to illustrate course material in every training she facilitates

Peggi Cooney

Peggi Cooney, M.S.W., is a Safety Organized Practice coach and trainer for Human Services at UC Davis Continuing and Professional Education. She has more than 15 years of experience in social services with expertise in child welfare, adult services and supervision in Colusa County. In that same county, Cooney developed the Independent Living Program and was part of the team that developed and implemented the Multiple Discipline Interview Team. During her tenure in Colusa County, she was also an adjunct faculty member, where she taught psychology at Woodland Community College.

Janice Boafo

Janice Boafo, LCSW, M.S.W., is a coach and facilitator whose professional life is informed by her lived experiences and more than 25 years of work in human services and behavioral health. She is dedicated to culturally responsive liberatory practices, community healing and the transformational power of story sharing. Her interests include educational equity, behavioral health recovery, public child welfare reform, pedagogy as activism, and exploring the intersections of art, culture and social justice.

Roger Coffman

Roger Coffman, J.D., is a retired senior deputy county counsel for Placer County. He served as a deputy for 39 years in Placer, Tulare and El Dorado Counties. Coffman has 34 years of experience representing county child welfare agencies, providing court representation, general legal advice, appellate representation and on-going training to child welfare staff. He has been an instructor with the Northern Academy at UC Davis since 1989, the Bay Area Academy for approximately 15 years and an occasional instructor with the Central Academy. He has practiced in state trial and appellate courts and in the federal district courts and the Federal Court of Appeal.

Antoinette Fabela

Antoinette Fabela, M.A., is of Ojibwa, Aztec and Mayo ancestry and lives in Auburn, California. She retired from Placer County in 2011 after 15 years as a social worker in the areas of ER, on-going, mental health, MDIC and ICWA cases. She has been an ICWA Qualified Witness, advocate and consultant for 15 counties since 2012 and has consulted with more than 75 tribes.

Luck Luckey

Luck Luckey worked for more than 17 years as a Senior Protective Services Worker with Child Welfare Services, specializing in emergency response, domestic violence, Safety Organized Practice (SOP), Structured Decision Making (SDM) and cultural responsiveness to children and families. In conjunction with Children’s Research Center (CRC),Luckey has trained across the United States and Canada on the implementation and integration of SDM, SOP and various domestic violence practice tools. Luckey identifies as gender non-binary and is devoted to advocating for, and supporting, LGBTQ+ children, youth and caregivers.
