Ages and Stages Questionnaire (ASQ)

The Ages and Stages Questionnaires® (ASQ) training is an interactive opportunity to learn about the ASQ-3™ and the ASQ:SE-2™, two important developmental screening tools designed to assess young children’s developmental progress and determine the need for more in-depth evaluation of a suspected delay. Research and practice highlight the sequential nature of development and the benefits of early intervention designed to correct or ameliorate challenges to a child’s current and future development. The training provides an overview of screening and monitoring; advantages of including parents in the screening process; and considerations when communicating results and making referrals.

The Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act (CAPTA) require children, birth to three with a substantiated allegation of child maltreatment, to be referred to early intervention services. Given that children in foster care experience developmental delays four to five times higher than other children and that children under age five are the fastest growing age group to enter care, the need to identify and address developmental issues early is critical.

The Ages and Stages Questionnaires® is a screening tool that can be used to screen infants and young children for delays during the crucial first five years of life. ASQ meets the recommendation by the California Department of Social Services to use standardized tools to identify children for referral. This questionnaire uses the parents' and/or caretakers’ observations of the child's developmental abilities to identify children in need of further assessment and referral for early intervention services.

Topics include:

  • The importance of developmental screening, early identification and early intervention for children identified through Child Welfare
  • Factors to consider when selecting a quality developmental screening tool
  • Using the ASQ-3™ and the ASQ:SE-2™
  • Communicating with families: engaging families, opportunities for providing information on child development, and sensitively sharing screening results with families

Day 1 Learning Objectives: ASQ-3™

  • Features of ASQ-3™ that will enhance screening and monitoring efforts with young children
  • How to administer, score, interpret and when to make referral decisions based on ASQ-3 results
  • Understanding the role of parents in the ASQ-3 screening process, including the validity of parent report and factors that may affect parents' responses

Day 2 Learning Objectives: ASQ:SE-2™

  • Features of ASQ:SE-2™ that will enhance screening and monitoring efforts with young children
  • How to administer, score, interpret, and when to make referral decisions based on ASQ:SE-2™ results
  • Understanding the role of parents in the ASQ:SE-2™ screening process, including the validity of parent report and factors that may affect parents' responses

Professional Credit 
UC Davis Continuing and Professional Education is approved by the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists to sponsor continuing education for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and/or LEPs. Approval of this course for continuing education credit is still pending at this time. If approved, the course may meet the qualifications for 11 hours of continuing education credit for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and/or LEPs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences. UC Davis Continuing and Professional Education maintains responsibility for this program/course and its content. Provider number 050148. Certificates of completion will be sent to participants within 4 weeks after the course after attendance and number of credits to be received are verified.
