Youth Use of Social Media, Gaming, and the Internet: A Caregiver's Guide

Over 90% of American youth visit the internet daily. Youth and adults differ significantly in their use of social media, gaming and internet platforms. While adults tend to stick with specific platforms, youth preferences evolve, often rapidly, from year to year.

This training is designed for adult caregivers of youth, such as caseworkers, administrators, transitional living specialists and parents who want a solid understanding of how teens engage with a variety of online platforms. All materials in this training are reviewed closely every four to six months to verify, and when necessary revise the information provided to better reflect current youth patterns of use.

Topics include:

  • Teen use of the internet
  • Preferred platforms and patterns of use
  • Fostering “learning” and “critical thinking” of information on the internet
  • Challenges for caregivers of teens
  • Cyberbullying
  • Monitoring slang and text acronyms
  • The blurry zone between appropriate and inappropriate adult platforms
  • Sexting
  • Parental controls and support
