In this workshop participants will learn how to better engage with youth over SOGIE (sexual orientation, gender identity and expression) matters under the umbrella of the LGBTQIA+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual) community. Participants will gain new and updated verbiage on SOGIE and LGBTQIA+ concepts and will have the opportunity to become better acquainted with different identities, topics and a better understanding of SOGIE as a whole. This workshop provides an overview of concepts, laws and vocabulary of the SOGIE & LGBTQIA+ community and how to be inclusive within Human Services.
Topics include:
- Improving communication skills when addressing the SOGIE/LGBTQIA+ community
- Becoming aware of laws protecting the LGBTQIA+ community
- Bridging gaps in interactions with youth who identify within the LGBTQIA+ community for positive outcomes
- Enhancing self-knowledge to ensure that inner-bias is not projected
- Exploring opportunities to be more inclusive in our work in Human Services
