Writing Effective Court Reports

This virtual workshop will focus on writing effective court reports for a Child Welfare audience. Participants will learn how to plan for and write effective reports related to jurisdiction, disposition, review, 366.26, post permanency and non-minor reviews. Participants will gain awareness of how to ensure that their court reports meet legal requirements and provide the court and parties with necessary information and evidence. Participants will review an effective report format which will enhance the likelihood of the social worker's recommendations being adopted by the court.

Topics Include:

  • Required findings, organization and structure of reports
  • Timelines for reunification service; extending and terminating services
  • Necessary legal findings and evidence
  • Documenting evidence of reasonable services and parental progress or lack thereof
  • Documentation of the establishment and facilitation of concurrent planning
  • Permanency issues: Adoption, Guardianship, ICWA
  • Non-minor dependent reports
