Working with Traumatized Children and Families

This course will be a dynamic, interactive, and didactic experience focused on applying the principles of the trauma informed care to assess, understand, and collaboratively develop a treatment plan to help their complex needs be met in a safe, effectively, and sustainable manner. A wide range of learning modalities will be employed including small and large group discussions, videos, lecture, and transfer of learning exercises.

Topics include:

  • Explaining the importance of determining why trauma-influenced behavior occurs
  • Defining trauma-influence behavior, understanding the adaptive functions of this behavior, and how to respond effectively
  • Demonstrating an understanding of trauma and culturally informed interventions

Also included with be a conversation about permanency and loss, attachment and brain development, assessment and treatment, and secondary trauma and self-care.
