This two-day course provides an educational space for child welfare workers to connect, learn, process, and/or understand the social unrest related to police brutality, Black Lives Matter, and racism related to Black persons in the United States. By providing historical and present context to systemic racism, this course will enhance workers’ understanding and perception related to sources of “resistance” for Black and brown children, youth, parents, families and caregivers. This course will also provide opportunities for assessment of self and engagement strategies utilized by workers who are engaging with populations that may be impacted by the current state of social unrest.
After attending this course, participants will be able to:
- Understand implicit bias, stereotypes and the brain
- Explain the history of the African American experience in the United States and how it informs current events
- Identify current policies, laws and institutional practices that contribute to oppression and systemic racism
- Value the importance of completing a self-assessment of privileges, power, thoughts and actions and their impact on others
- Set goals for taking individual action against racism in their workplace and community
