This course is designed for professionals who supervise visits for children in any type of out-of-home placement. Participants gain a comprehensive understanding of their responsibilities before, during and after visits. The training covers how to ensure safety during visits, implement effective intervention strategies and document visits accurately. It also highlights the critical role visits play in supporting parent-child attachment and achieving permanency, while meeting legal mandates.
By enhancing core competencies in supervision, safety and engagement, this course contributes directly to improving child welfare case management services.
By the end of this training, participants will be able to:
- Describe the purposes of visits, levels of supervision and the roles and responsibilities of all involved parties
- Explain the stages of a visit and how to support the child, parent and caregiver in having safe, culturally appropriate interactions, including managing common behaviors during each phase
- Accurately document a visit using a detailed case scenario
- Identify high-risk cases (e.g., active addiction, intimate partner violence, mental health crises, uncooperative participants) and determine appropriate actions to de-escalate, intervene or stop a visit to maintain safety
- Develop an implementation plan to apply best practices and support continued learning and skill development.
