Prerequisite: Completion of the SOP Foundational Institute (and/or or Core for Social Workers in Northern California), is recommended pre-requisite for this training, but not required.
About the Series
The SOP and Substance Use Disorders series teaches safety-organized concepts to enhance proficiency in a child welfare social worker’s ability to engage caregivers whose use or abuse of substances may endanger the children in their care, and to effectively plan for long-term recovery from substance use disorders.
About the Course
This foundational training is the first in a dynamic three-course series focused on SOP and SUDs and serves as a prerequisite to subsequent sessions. Future sessions will focus on assessing for safety in SUD cases and case planning for recovery.
What will I learn in this session?
After attending this training, participants will be able to:
- Understand the prevalence and origins of substance use disorders
- Explore the impact of stigma upon people with a substance use disorder
- Engage families with a cultural humility lens
- Describe the factors that increase the risk of developing substance use disorders, including
- childhood trauma and adolescent substance use
- Understand the impact of caregiver substance misuse on children
- Uphold the voice of the child in guiding interventions
- Explore treatment options for substance use disorders, including harm reduction and medication assisted treatment
