The SOP and Substance Use Disorders series teaches safety-organized concepts to enhance proficiency in a child welfare social worker’s ability to engage caregivers whose use or abuse of substances may endanger the children in their care, and to effectively plan for long-term recovery from substance use disorders.

This installment of the dynamic SOP and SUD series focuses on developing case plans and family time (visit) plans for cases where the parent or caregiver is impacted by a substance use disorder.
Who Should Attend?
This session is geared toward ongoing/family reunification and/or family maintenance social workers who partner with families to create that plans for lasting recovery.
What Will I Learn in this Session?
After attending this training, participants will be able to:
- Identify the role of child welfare worker in mitigating the impact of caregiver substance abuse
- Learn how to work with families to explore harm reduction and abstinence treatment options
- Understand the stages of recovery, the relapse process and recovery that honors family culture and values
- Create safety and case plans that focus on parenting behavior change, enhancing child safety, and developing and engaging a network of safe and sober adults
- Apply knowledge of SUDs to developing family time/ visitation plans
- Apply the Core Practice Model values and beliefs to engage caregivers and lead them toward healing of the family unit
