Mental Well-Being in Tribal Communities

In this session we will review some broad aspects of mental health, the ACES study, general statistics in the US and that of the NA community, NA specific topics including prevalence, disparities, and historical trauma. The course is geared to help attendees gain understanding and an ability to recognize some of the most prevalent issues including depression, anxiety, non-suicidal behavior, suicide, and substance use.

This workshop includes discussion points which provide hopeful information about recovery, the basic information as to what Mental Health First Aid is, discussion on Self Care and why it is so important for them as individuals who serve the public.

Participants will:

  • Understand what mental health or mental well-being is and the ACES study
  • Recognize some of the most prevalent issues including depression, anxiety, non-suicidal behavior, suicide and substance use
  • Formulate and help support staff in understanding Mental Wellbeing in general, then specifically for the Native American client population while considering prevalence, disparities and historical traumg, adding cultural norms in suggesting supports to the client population
