Mental Health: The Reluctant or Hard to Engage Client

During this one-day training, participants will integrate knowledge and theory about common mental health issues and the social environment in order to better engage and serve reluctant adult clients with comprehensive service plans and effective interventions.

Topics will include:

  • Beliefs about mental illness and substance use disorders
  • Reasons people who need treatment do not get treatment
  • Categories of mental disorders
  • Client engagement issues

Each participant is asked to write and bring a paragraph about a client who has been reluctant to seek mental health treatment or has been hard to engage. Please include the following:

  • Working diagnosis
  • Attempts at engagement
  • Client’s personal goals
  • Reflections on the client’s reasons for not getting treatment
  • Other barriers including cultural issues
  • Plan going forward
