Individualized Care for Youth with Complex Needs

This training covers complex behavioral needs in youth in care, such as substance misuse, commercial sexual exploitation and gang involvement, emphasizing trauma's impact on behavior. Using a trauma-informed lens, it aids Child Welfare staff in individualized case planning. The training includes case scenarios and group discussions to address implicit bias and identify assessment areas, prevention and intervention services. 

Participants will learn to: 

  • Address youth needs with appropriate language and bias assessment. 

  • Examine and understand various complex behavioral needs. 

  • Explain trauma's impact on brain development and behavior. 

  • Recognize co-morbid disorders and substance misuse. 

  • Describe commercial sexual exploitation and gang involvement. 

  • Identify youth violence related to toxic masculinity and oppression. 

  • Contextualize gang involvement as a complex behavioral need deeply connected to oppression. 

  • Utilize assessment tools for effective case planning.
