Identifying and Addressing Mental Health and Mental Illness in Child Welfare

This engaging and interactive training focuses on the wide range of mental health and mental illness issues related to impairments in social, emotional and behavioral functioning for both children and parents regarding their entry into, remaining in, and exiting successfully from the child welfare system. We will explore examples of mental health and mental illness, the impact of bio-psycho-social-cultural factors, commonly observed mental health diagnoses in our child welfare families, and intervention opportunities for both professional and paraprofessionals.

After attending this training, participants will be able to:

  • Recognize the presence of mental health and mental health in all individuals that we serve in child welfare, no matter their level of functioning.
  • Understand the range of social, emotional, and behavioral functioning and intervention responses among children, adolescents and adults who experience symptoms of mental and emotional disorders.
  • Recognize that biological, psychological, cultural and environmental factors influence individuals' social, emotional and behavioral functioning.
  • Describe the individual and collective roles of all service providers who serve children, youth and parents with mental health disorders inside the child welfare system.
  • Identify child welfare and behavioral health case plan interventions that can be utilized to assist children, adolescents and caregivers suffering from mental disorders from a trauma-informed perspective.
