Human Trafficking

This introductory, one day class is designed to help provide training to probation officers and child welfare workers on the topic of human trafficking.  Foster youth are at a higher risk of exploitation, and this class will help staff understand issues related to the scope of human trafficking in California.
This course will provide a framework for understanding the issues around Human Trafficking, CSEC and how to identify, address treatment and service needs for youth and develop a response within your community and agency.
Specifically, participants will be able to:
  • Define human trafficking and its legal components
  • Know the elements of human trafficking and commercially sexually exploited children (CSEC)
  • Identify basic legal issues related to human trafficking:
    • How human tracking laws relate to exploited children
    • Mandatory reporting
  • Understand the intersection of human trafficking, CSEC and the juvenile justice and child welfare systems  
  • Interpret acronyms of commonly used terms and agencies/initiatives involved in combating human trafficking
  • Identify common physical and behavioral indicators, as well as risk and warning signs
  • Describe how societal factors contribute to demand
  • Identify venues that foster human trafficking
  • Identify potential human trafficking victims
  • Identify tools that can be used to identify and assess victims of trafficking
