Foundations of Anti-“Ism” Practice

“Isms” based on social constructs (e.g., race, gender, age, class, religion, economics, political affiliation, color, national origin, disability, etc.) have existed throughout human history. It has produced wars, slavery, the creation of nations and legal codes. As human services professionals, we have an ethical duty to actively breakdown barriers, ensure inclusion and create a sense of belonging at our workplace in order to best serve vulnerable children, youth, adults and families.

Participants will:

  • Define and review terminology related to “Isms”
  • Examine historical and current events to understand how “Isms” operates today
  • Identify resources to support anti-bias, discrimination and inequities.
