Common Core 3.0 requires new social workers to engage in a specific set of field-based activities that will enhance their learning of the in-class sessions. Each new social worker will be assigned a field advisor (most likely his or her supervisor) to work through these activities. All field advisors must attend a two-day Coaching Institute and this one-day class on the field-based activities.
This course will review the Field Guide which outlines the specific activities new social workers will be required to complete.
The field advisor will support the new social worker before, during, and after identified field activities. The person in this role will:
- Promote a learning environment and use appropriate coaching strategies, tools and techniques to promote desirable and sustainable growth for the new social worker
- Promote knowledge and skill development that aligns with the desired practice
- Track completion of field activities
By the end of the training, participants will be able to:
- Identify the role of the field advisor and activities to be completed by the field advisor
- Identify common activities performed by the social worker that will meet the requirements for the field activity
- Demonstrate using the field guide to plan for, observe and provide feedback for a field activity
- Demonstrate using the data collection survey for specific field activities
- Value the role of the field advisor as a critical element in the training of new social workers
- Value the role of the field advisor as one of a change agent within the organization—supporting new workers, identifying barriers and developing solutions
All supervisors or other staff who are assuming the role of the field advisor for social workers in Core 3.0 (or 2.5) must attend this one-day class and the two-day Coaching Institute. It is preferred that the Coaching Institute is taken prior to this class.
