Building Cultural Competency: Recognizing Unconscious Bias

This workshop will support the participants’ learning to recognize the power and/or impact of their unconscious cultural bias in a diverse work environment. Course content is designed to uncover personal unconscious biases, provide tools to adjust automatic patterns of thinking, and ultimately to effectively engage the families and clients they serve.

Topics include:

  • Increasing awareness of personal unconscious prejudices and biases
  • Understanding how unconscious engagement can impact the dynamics between the provider and client
  • Recognizing how culturally related concerns, issues and miscommunication become cultural conflicts and Civil Rights Division 21 complaints of discrimination
  • Exploring communication techniques, conciliatory and mediation engagement skills in order to create a stronger and more consistent provider/client working relationship
