Adverse Childhood Experiences Survey (ACES) and Trauma Informed Care

Adverse childhood experiences, or ACEs, are potentially traumatic events that occur in childhood (0-17 years), and can include things like, experiencing violence, abuse, or neglect; or witnessing violence in the home or it could also include aspects of the child’s environment that can undermine their sense of safety, stability, and bonding such as parental substance misuse, mental health problems or parental separation. ACEs are linked to chronic health problems, mental illness, and substance misuse in adulthood. ACEs can also negatively impact education and job opportunities.

This two-part series will explore the connection between trauma and the child welfare system. Topics include the intersectionality of trauma and the ways that Social Determinants of Health are related.

Participants will gain understanding in:

• How trauma impacts us (ourselves, our clients, our colleagues)

• Understanding and applying Adverse Childhood Experiences Study (ACES) responsibly
