This workshop is for new and novice case management staff who are looking to maximize their time and energy through a variety of techniques that emphasize efficiency and effectiveness. Concepts and components of time management and prioritization will be covered with an emphasis placed on the importance of organization, being effective, planning efficiently, and prioritizing tasks.

Track: 101

If you feel overwhelmed, stressed, burned out, or ineffective, then this workshop is for you. You will know the value of focusing only on what you can control and reducing suffering by staying in your own lane. You will discover new ways to manage your energy, create a list of professional boundaries, and commit to regaining control over your time and emotions.

Supporting inspiring home-based business development through a case-management approach. Strategies for leveraging community events as an opportunity to give aspiring business owners the opportunity to trial products and develop business management skills. This course will help develop strategies in addressing these questions.  How can we motivate and assist clients while working with the understanding of their barriers?  What can we do to prepare ourselves, participants and their families for post-pandemic challenges? How can we build a system of support for ourselves in giving to our communities? How cultural competency requires personal commitment and a significant involvement from your team to embrace communities for change.

Connecting with Remote Teams

Track: Leadership

Leading remote or hybrid teams is a necessity for many large programs. Multiple staff in geographically diverse locations can make building a cohesive and high functioning team especially difficult. This workshop will explore tenets of remote team leadership including effective communication, change management, building trust, and other best practices to make your teams more successful, inclusive, and efficient.

Evening Keynote: Lyla June Johnston, “Traditional Community Care Strategies” (During Dinner)

Throughout Turtle Island, many ancestors from many different Indigenous Nations had refined mechanisms for maintaining health, happiness and unity in our communities. This included Creation stories, linguistic terms, ceremonies, peacemaking processes, traditional foods/medicines, sports and kinship roles. This talk will discuss some of these traditions with the overall message that most of the answers to our problems are right here in our languages, cultures and traditions.

This is Part 1 of a 2-part course. Case Management is the backbone of any Tribal TANF organization, and it is critical that all new case managers have an in-depth understanding of Tribal TANF and its related best practices. This interactive session will begin with an overview of Tribal TANF, including the origins of the program, its intent and purpose and how federal and program policies relate to case management positions and service delivery. We will also explore the diversity of case management in Tribal TANF settings. Through this session, case managers will be empowered with the knowledge required to ensure successful coordination of Tribal TANF services for eligible participants, their families and support systems.

Utilizing a youth development framework within any organization is the intentional, prosocial approach that engages youth within their communities, schools, organizations, peer groups, and families in a manner that is productive, and constructive. Youth development recognizes, utilizes, and enhances young people’s strengths, and promotes positive outcomes for young people. We will explore establishing programming through an equity lens focused on youth culture, creativity, and systems-change. Youth development can be a catalyst for greater organizational change when youth needs, and voice are at the center.

The pandemic has required programs to engage in significant changes in all aspects of the program including rethinking service delivery, engagement of clients and employees for programs to continue to meet the needs of clients, staff and communities served. This workshop will provide leaders with some strategies and knowledge about their role in facilitating successful change.

Lunch and Keynote Speaker: Michelle Villegas-Frazier, "A Sneak Peek into the UC Davis Native Nest!"

Join us to learn more about the Native American Academic Student Success Center, also known as the Native Nest! Given the rich diversity of our Indigenous community, we strive to make UC Davis a place where all identities are celebrated, honoring students’ achievements and supporting their personal and academic journeys. The Native American Academic Student Success Center (NAASSC) focuses on creating a sense of belonging for Native American students in a culturally appropriate way. Michelle Villegas-Frazier will discuss more about the center, highlighting the resources they provide to enhance student success, the culturally relevant activities, and its support network. Our youth are our future! Our hope is that this keynote will inspire positive change, culture shifts and community building!

This course will explore ways to manage a caseload, when dealing with multiple cultures and expectations. Every nation may have different requirements and case managers may not be from the same tribe, and case managers may not be native at all. However, it is critical that the case manager be thoughtful of ways to connect and maintain cultural humility and honor the individual and the family’s right to choose the best approach to achieving their goals. Case managers will learn to serve all customers with compassion and support, removing judging and replacing it with curiosity.

Best Practices in Program Development

Track: Leadership

Leaders will have the opportunity to highlight innovative and effective strategies for instituting successful TANF programs. Leaders will be able to share what they do to provide exciting opportunities, collaborate to assist others to develop meaningful programs for their communities, and discuss how they address unique challenges they may face. This workshop will also allow leaders to deliver a 15-min presentation on a successful project they’ve implemented; and then host a Q&A panel.

Prerequisite: To participate in this workshop, leaders will need to complete an online submission form indicating which of the 4 Purposes of TANF their initiative addresses, provide a brief project mission statement, outline the objectives, and develop an implementation strategy and its results.

Lunch and Keynote Speaker: Heather Hostler, "Creating Partnerships between Tribal TANF Agencies and Native American Legal Aid Services"

Heather Hostler, executive director for the California Indian Legal Services (CILS), will discuss ways for legal aids and tribal organizations to build strong partnerships and identify how to best serve tribal communities through this unique alliance of goals. There are great opportunities for Tribal TANF programs and Native American legal aids to work together to best serve their clients, who are likely income eligible for both programs. She will discuss understanding the needs of the clients, where there is intersectionality and a well-coordinated approach to deliver resources. CILS is embarking on a new strategic plan and exploring dynamic partnerships, of which Tribal TANF and Indian Health Clinics are a priority.

Motivation and Engagement Strategies

Track: Supervisory

The sudden shift to remote work that many Tribal TANF organizations have made, has left many supervisors and employees struggling to adapt to new norms of productivity and communication. This workshop will examine challenges and opportunities that come with this new work paradigm, including best practices for managing remote employees. Participants will also be introduced to personality and motivational tools that can be used to tailor communication and enhance engagement for their remote staff.

Establishing a Sustainable Organizational Culture

Organizational culture is the glue that keeps a successful organization together and without it, it leads to dysfunction, unpredictability, and unsatisfactory performance. This workshop will provide leaders with insight on characteristics of a positive organizational culture and how to sustain and adapt culture to continue be a thriving human services program.

This entertaining event will be an opportunity for participants to share their unique cultural expressions that make their tribes special. We’ll see a variety of cultural expressions, including traditional clothing and jewelry, music, dance, storytelling, rituals and other artforms. All participants are invited to join in the audience, and of course, we’re accepting submissions! Anyone interested in presenting, please submit your interest to tribal@ucdavis.edu by July 12. The Cultural Exchange promises to be a beautiful and meaningful portion of the Institute. Appetizers and drinks will be served.
